The winery

Montemajor represents Southern Italy through a collection of wines inspired by its history, culture and extraordinary natural heritage.

At the heart of the project lies the idea of the Mediterranean as a place where different worlds have always met. Land and sea, East and West, ancient traditions and contemporary life come together to shape the identity of Southern Italy.

Through its wines, Montemajor seeks to express this unique heritage, bringing to the glass the character of a territory shaped by centuries of cultural encounters and by the distinctive environmental features of the South.

Story

The story of Montemajor begins with the hill that bears its name: a 261-metre-high elevation near the left bank of the Ofanto River, in the province of Foggia. Standing isolated in the surrounding plain, close to the ancient tratturi once travelled by local shepherds, Montemajor has witnessed important chapters in the history of Southern Italy.

The area is remembered for the Battle of Montemajor, fought between the Normans and Byzantines during the first Norman conquest of Southern Italy. Its history therefore reflects the encounter between Eastern and Western civilizations that has shaped the Mediterranean for centuries.

From Greek and Byzantine influence to Roman and Christian traditions, the cultural identity of Apulia and Southern Italy has been formed through a continuous exchange between peoples, languages and civilizations. The legacy of these encounters can still be felt today, from the Greek-speaking communities of Salento to the many cultural traces scattered throughout the region.

Montemajor brings this history into the present through wine, seeking to celebrate the Southern Italian identity born from this extraordinary meeting of cultures.

The Estate

Montemajor is rooted in a landscape where land and sea exist in constant dialogue.

Southern Italy stretches along approximately 800 kilometres of coastline, forming a sun-drenched Mediterranean territory whose geographical position has always connected the Italian peninsula with the wider Mediterranean world and the Southern Balkans.

Its natural environment, together with its long history of cultural exchange, has created a distinctive heritage of landscapes, traditions and agricultural excellence.

For Montemajor, these environmental characteristics are an essential part of the identity of its wines. The wines are conceived as a reflection of the South itself—of its sun, its landscapes and the meeting point between the land and the surrounding sea.

The Cellar

For Montemajor, wine is a way of giving tangible form to the history and identity of Southern Italy.

The wines are created to reflect the distinctive character of a territory shaped by its natural environment and by centuries of interaction between Eastern and Western cultures.
