Tenuta Cocci Grifoni

The winery

Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is a family-owned winery that cultivates 69 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the Marche region. Dedicated to native grape varieties, the estate combines tradition with continuous research and innovation, always guided by a deep respect for nature and sustainable viticulture.

The vineyards are surrounded by a striking landscape of rolling hills, steep slopes, woodlands and dramatic clay formations, creating a unique ecosystem where people and nature coexist in harmony. This close connection with the land inspires every aspect of the winery's work, from vineyard management to winemaking.

Certified by Equalitas for environmental, economic and social sustainability, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni follows the principles of "honest agriculture": organic and vegan-certified production, biodiversity protection, low-impact farming practices and responsible packaging. For the winery, sustainability is not a trend, but a long-term commitment to preserving both the land and the people who care for it.

Story

The history of Tenuta Cocci Grifoni is closely linked to the rediscovery of Pecorino, one of Italy's oldest native white grape varieties. Once widely cultivated in the Marche region, Pecorino was gradually abandoned due to its naturally low yields and came close to extinction after the phylloxera epidemic of the 19th century.

In 1982, Guido Cocci Grifoni set out to find the last surviving vines, convinced that this forgotten grape possessed extraordinary potential. He discovered them in an old vineyard near Arquata del Tronto, propagated the original plants and shared both vines and knowledge with local growers, laying the foundations for the revival of Pecorino throughout the region.

After years of experimentation, Guido identified the cool hillside vineyards of southern Marche as the ideal environment for the variety. In 1990, Tenuta Cocci Grifoni became the first winery to release a 100% Pecorino wine, proving that this native grape could produce wines of remarkable structure, freshness and minerality.

Today, Pecorino has become one of Marche's flagship grape varieties, and its renaissance is widely recognised as one of the most important achievements in modern Italian viticulture. Tenuta Cocci Grifoni remains proudly at the heart of this story, continuing to preserve the identity, heritage and unique character of its territory.

The Estate

The vineyards of Tenuta Cocci Grifoni are located among the rolling hills of southern Marche, where the influence of the Adriatic Sea and the nearby Sibillini Mountains creates an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The combination of sunshine, cooling breezes and diverse soils allows native grape varieties such as Pecorino and Passerina to fully express their distinctive character.

For the winery, terroir is the foundation of every wine. Climate, soil and landscape shape the aromas, flavours and structure of each vintage, giving every grape variety its unmistakable identity. Whether produced as a single-varietal wine or as part of a blend such as Rosso Piceno Superiore, the wines faithfully reflect the unique characteristics of their origin.

The Cellar

At Tenuta Cocci Grifoni, winemaking is guided by the desire to preserve the authentic identity of each grape variety and its place of origin. Traditional knowledge is combined with modern techniques to enhance the natural expression of the fruit while respecting the characteristics of every vintage.

Native yeasts, gentle vinification and carefully selected maturation methods are used according to each wine's style. Stainless steel tanks preserve the freshness and aromatic purity of the white wines, while oak ageing is reserved for selected reds to add complexity without masking their varietal character. Every decision in the cellar reflects the winery's philosophy of producing elegant, terroir-driven wines with minimal intervention.
