Pietraforata
The winery
Story
Founded in 2012 out of a love for their land, the winery, run by Marinella, Gianni, and Sofia, places unwavering emphasis on quality and the exaltation of the native grape varieties of Alto Piemonte. By choosing to conduct the entire production cycle in the historic premises of the ancient castle of Ghemme, the winery aims to keep alive the traditions of this historic location, combining traditional flavors with the modernity of new winemaking technologies. The name Pietraforata (Forked Stone) comes from a stone located on the façade of the cellar, with a hole in the center. The function of this particular element is still unknown, but it inspired the winery's name, strongly evoking the location where the cellars are located.
The Estate
The vineyards cover an area of 4 hectares, planted with native Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Bonarda grape varieties, ranging in age from 10 to 60 years, with recent vines now entering production. The vineyards extend across the hills of Ghemme, within the UNESCO Sesia-Val Grande Geopark. Here, the soils, rich in clay, sand, and volcanic pebbles, give the wines a unique mineralogical richness from which the vines draw precious elements, giving the wine complex, mineral-rich structures. Furthermore, the microclimate is influenced by the proximity of Monte Rosa, Europe's second-highest mountain, which protects from cold winter winds and encourages cool summer breezes, creating significant temperature swings ideal for grape ripening.
The Cellar
The winemaking, aging, and tasting cellars are located within the ancient medieval walls of the Ghemme castle, in rooms that have always been used for wine storage thanks to the optimal natural conditions. The spaces, renovated while maintaining as much of the original architectural structure as possible, are characterized by small rooms and traditional materials such as stone, wood, and brick.
In this place steeped in history, modern winemaking equipment ensures precision and quality in the production processes, guaranteeing a high-quality product.
The aging cellar houses six oak barrels, barriques, and tonneaux, where our Nebbiolo rests and evolves, developing aromas, structure, and flavors. The vinification cellar houses the steel vats and production machinery.
